She sat on the park bench, watching children play, the scene a kaleidoscope of joy she could no longer connect with. Her article, about the importance of early childhood education, was out, she had received the notice. It was a topic she held dear. Her name, however, was not attached. The world around her seemed to become hazy, out of focus.

The sunshine felt weak, ineffective.

Her muscles ached, a deep-seated weariness she hadn't realized she carried. The injustice of it all was a heavy burden, the weight of which threatened to pull her under.
